Project summary
Ergonomics in action in Velbert – a fully customised workstation for Nurhak Metalworking
Nurhak specialises in the surface treatment and finishing of metal products. The family-run business, based in Velbert, was founded in 1991 and grinds, polishes and satin-finishes metals to a high standard of quality, serving sectors including the automotive and sanitary industries.
Nurhak Metalworking processes metals using both traditional craftsmanship and fully automated methods. At first glance, these approaches may seem contradictory; at Nurhak, however, they are successfully combined.
Shapes that cannot be machined automatically require the skill of highly skilled specialists. It is only through their expertise and experience that traditional craftsmanship and robotics can be combined with precision and cost-effectiveness.
It is precisely these skilled workers who are valued, respected and supported at Nurhak. And this is not just a poetic, catch-all advertising slogan, but a very concrete reality: after a long-serving employee suffered a stroke, his previous workstation no longer suited his needs and he was no longer able to carry out his work as before. For the company, it was a matter of course to redesign the workplace so that the employee could continue to contribute his expertise – with new support.
Faced with this new and sudden challenge, Nurhak sought a suitable solution and found it in the Rocholz GmbH showroom in its home town of Velbert.
As a specialist in ergonomic logistics workstations, Rocholz GmbH was delighted to take on this project and developed a solution designed specifically to relieve strain on staff, support them and promote their well-being.
The equipment used included two SYSTEM FLEX logistics tables with electric height adjustment and accessories, a pneumatic lift and a cutting stand.
The new workstation is divided into two areas: quality control and packaging. Whilst many projects feature compact, tabletop-style layouts such as island or L-shaped configurations, the entire workstation here has been designed as a continuous line. This linear layout avoids protruding edges, eliminates obstacles and creates a clear, open sequence that facilitates direct workflows and unimpeded movement.
At the same time, SYSTEM FLEX offers maximum adaptability: the electric height adjustment with multiple preset positions can be set to the correct working height at the touch of a button, whether you are standing, sitting or using a standing aid.
Where there used to be enclosed storage space under the workbenches, there is now open space. Packaging materials, tools and work equipment have been moved to the upper levels, where they are neatly organised on perforated back panels, shelves and storage units, or in two drawers. Everything is within easy reach and can be accessed individually. Ample legroom for different sitting and standing positions means there is no longer any need to search for work equipment or bend down.
Each of the two work areas was fitted with a SYSTEM FLEX logistics table.
Quality control takes place at the SYSTEM FLEX table on the right. At Nurhak, no item leaves the premises unless it has been inspected by a trained eye and found to be flawless. To assist this trained eye and at the same time reduce the strain on the employee, a monitor with a data link to a magnifying glass has been integrated. This allows the employee to inspect the finished metal products without having to hold them up for long periods.
To ensure that this monitor could be integrated directly into the workspace via an articulated arm, it simply needed to feature a universal VESA quick-release mount: SYSTEM FLEX easily accommodates other products and combines them into an ergonomic, flexible whole. The height and tilt can thus be adjusted at any time to ensure optimal support during this task.
After quality control, the items are packed at the neighbouring table. Where previously an additional workbench positioned across the space stood between the two work areas and separated them, a pneumatic lift now enables a smooth, ergonomic transition.
The lift is operated via a foot switch that can be positioned flexibly on the floor, allowing it to adjust to the required ergonomic height for transferring metal goods to the packing tables. As the lift is shallower than the work tables, no edges protrude and the workflow is not impeded. A pinch guard has also been installed to ensure safety at work.
The packaging material is fed from the left to the packing table via a cutting stand. This too has been designed so that it does not protrude beyond the depth of the table – a bespoke design that continues the theme of clean lines whilst also enabling ergonomic and safe handling.
As SYSTEM FLEX is certified as an ergonomic product, Nurhak was able to secure an investment grant from the Integration Office to redesign the workplace.
This project goes beyond the prevention of illness and injury and demonstrates what practical ergonomics really means: a workplace that adapts to the individual and provides reliable support and empowerment in day-to-day work.
We were delighted to be part of this special ergonomic solution – thank you very much!
